This year we are renovating the kitchen in our unit.
Follow along with the progress 🙂

The Planning Begins

We have a project for the last part of 2025.  I am planning an entire refit of our kitchen.

A New Wall is Coming

We  have decided to add a wall to the kitchen to hide the fridge and allow for cabinets above the fridge.
I put a call out on the local Facebook Community Board to find a builder who would be happy to do this small job.

Measuring Up and Dismantling

A visit from the cabinetmaker and dismantling the old pantry unit.

Wall Construction.

The beginnings of the new wall.

The prep work is (mostly) done.

The prep work is done:
David installed wall sheeting and new powerpoints, and Mitchell finalised measurements and plans, now approved.
A plasterer will finish the cornice, then we’ll paint.
Demolition starts at the end of September—exciting times ahead!

Another step closer - With a glitch.

This week we have had the plasterer in to finish setting the wall that we had built earlier and also we have emptied out most of the floor cupboards in preparation for demo day at the end of the month .

Demo Day(s)

On Friday, both the plumber and electrician visited to disconnect kitchen services in preparation for cabinet removal. The plumber capped water pipes so the dishwasher could still be used, while the electrician removed old power points, disconnected appliances, and ran a new circuit for a future oven. Temporary kitchen setups were arranged around the house. On Saturday, we began dismantling the kitchen, starting with the benchtop and cabinets. Unfortunately, we found mould behind the wall, which needs addressing. The next major task is removing and relaying the floor tiles.

Tiles – The Next Messy Job

The tiler arrived at 7 AM and quickly set about jackhammering up all the old floor tiles, and removing the wall tiles and the mouldy plaster board.

I am glad our kitchen is only small and I thought to put a sheet over our couch and temporary kitchen because my goodness what a noise and mess… dust everywhere.

Another day - Another Trade

This morning saw Tim the plasterer back to re-board the walls that were removed thanks to the mould.
I was very lucky he was able to come today as by his standards, this is only a short job and he had another short job later on in the afternoon.

The Cabinets are Installed

Today was a BIG day 🙂
Mitchell the cabinet maker arrived about 7:30.  The plumber also arrived at 7:30 and between the two of them they were able to co-ordinate and cut the plumbing pipes down to where Mitchell needed them to fit the cabinets.

Yay! We have a completed kitchen.

The tiler came bright and  early to lay the tiles for the splash back. It did not take him very long and he was able to grout them on the same day.
We only had to be careful with them for 24 hours. He told us not to wipe them over or really not to use the kitchen at all until the grout and the silicon sealant had all cured properly.
